Water Crossing Course 

1.             This training course is one evening of theoretical instruction and one day of practical instruction and is designed to equip members with the knowledge and skills to confidently undertake water crossings. This course will include the theoretical aspects of water crossings followed by a practical application of the theory. 
 
2.             The course includes:
 
Theory 
  • Vehicle preparation including the use of blinds;
  • Assessment of river bed, water depth and stream flow;
  • Methods of entering, crossing and exiting the river;
  • Dangers to vehicles and members inherent in water crossings;
    • Currents;
    • Depth;
    • Ability to swim;
    • Wild Animals. 
Practical: 
  • Vehicle preparation Instructor assessment
    • Blinds;
    • Waterproofing;
  • Students making individual assessments under guidance.
  • At least four practical crossings at a depth to at least hub height 
3.             The curriculum, course content and assessment process will be made available to members attending this training.
 
Sand Driving Course
 
4.             This training course is one evening of theoretical instruction and one day of practical instruction and is designed to equip members with the knowledge and skills to confidently undertake sand driving.
 
5.             This course will include the theoretical aspects of sand driving followed by a practical application of the theory. 
 
Theoretical aspects: 
  • Driving on soft sand and hard sand;
  • Beaches and Coastal Dunes;
  • Desert driving;
  • Vehicle preparation including the importance of tyre pressures;
  • Dangers to vehicles and members inherent in sand driving.
  • Environmental and ecological impacts.
  • Sand driving Occupational Health and Safety components (use of flags, other drivers, tourists, fishermen etc).
  • Vehicle preparation. 
Practical Aspects: 
  • Vehicle preparation;
    • Tyre Pressure;
    • Flag fitting.
  • Demonstration by Instructors on sand driving technique.
  • Supervised practical training in deep sand. 
6.             The curriculum, course content and assessment process will be made available to members attending this training. 
 
Practical Map Reading, Navigation, Route Planning and GPS
 
7.             Training in Practical Map Reading, Navigation, Route Planning and GPS will be provided as required. Training will be by classroom and practical field exercises to introduce maps, the compass, the GPS, mapping software and the relationship between a map and the terrain.
 
Theory
  • Understanding and interpreting map data.
  • Map based route planning.
  • Using maps, including the use of computer based software packages.
  • Using a GPS and relating data to a map.
  • Risk factors inherent in map reading and use of a GPS.
 
Practical
  • Classroom exercises and basic route planning with a map
  • Field exercises. 
8.             The course content includes instruction, immediate feedback advice and assistance, and the opportunity for personal assessment through practical exercises. The curriculum and course content including assessment processes will be made available to members undertaking the course.
