If you own a four wheel drive vehicle and live in Canberra or the surrounding region of NSW, there are many reasons why you should consider joining the Southern Tablelands Four Wheel Drive Club. Southern Tablelands is the largest 4WD Club in the region. It was established in 1976, and currently has almost 300 members who have joined for a variety of reasons but who all enjoy the benefits of membership. The Club provides intensive training in driving and maintaining your vehicle. Driver education courses at basic and advanced levels are provided for all members; basic training for novices is a prerequisite for participation in Club trips, while the advanced training is recommended for drivers when they have gained more experience and who want to develop competence and confidence in negotiating more difficult terrain. Club trips of one day or a weekend’s duration to scenic and challenging areas around the south coast and highlands are conducted throughout the year. Longer trips to the Victorian Alps, Cape York, the Simpson Desert and the Kimberleys are organised on a seasonal basis. These trips, together with a series of social functions, are all planned to provide club members with safe, enjoyable and rewarding recreational experiences. Family participation is warmly encouraged. Because of the keen interest of Club members in our natural environment, the Club has a strong commitment to conservation while advocating that access to National Parks, forests and other areas of scenic, geological or cultural value must be maintained for responsible four wheel driving. Members must observe the 4WD Code of Ethics. The Club actively lobbies State Governments to keep 4WD access tracks open, and conducts community service activities ranging from the recovery of derelict vehicles from bushland to retrieving international balloons for the Canberra Festival. The Southern Tablelands 4WD Club holds monthly meetings, which regularly feature talks from experts on topics ranging from vehicle mechanics to bush lore. Meetings are also used, along with the Club’s monthly publication Southern Trails, to publicise coming trips and other Club activities and to report on past journeys and events.
